You’ve Heard About The R140 Billion City We’re About To Build 25km From Cape Town, Right? [Video+Images]

Don't feel bad if you haven't, but perhaps it's time you took a little look for yourself at the new city called Wescape.

It’s funny how some things are splashed across the news day in and day out, yet many South Africans (and even Capetonians) don’t know about a city called Wescape.

Building is set to begin with the next three years, the plans approved by the Western Cape government back in 2013.

The city will be home to 800 000 people, create 300 000 jobs and boast 400 schools – one per 2 000 residents in case your maths is sketchy.

These below, courtesy of Business Tech, give us a better sense of where this development will take place:

According to the project runners, no set budget has been pinned down for the development, but reports in 2014 put the price at R140 billion.

The entire project will be privately funded, but developers, CommuniTgrow, are currently in the process of preparing an environmental impact assessment and securing finance.

According to the group, construction on the project could start as soon as 2017, though more realistically in 2019 or 2020.

As is often the case the concept pictures look amazing:

I’d be mightily surprised if all of this was finished for that R140 billion budget, and if you want so see how lofty the plans really are check out this video:

Love some stock photos intermingled with concept art, all set to some uplifting music.

Hopefully they’re saving the cash they may have used on the video for the actual building of the city.

Exciting times ahead though.
