I remember being a wee lad back in the day and seeing some rather unusual exam questions – never mind how many pineapples John is left with after he shared them around, why did he have 75 to start with in the first place?
Well for one Jozi school the assignments are a little more sharp-edged, a Christian school under the pump after they used a Zapiro comic and rewarded students for disparaging comments about the president.
Let’s see the comic and the accompanying question for the Grade Six assignment:
So JZ (with Zapiro’s trademark showerhead, of course) is floating in a pool of money and sipping on a drink – not sitting on the fence here.
That’s not even the worst bit though, because wait until you see how they marked one kid’s answer to a follow up question:
News24 sums it up:
[The fourth] question asks if, based on the cartoon, the child would vote for the man to be president.
One pupil answered: “No I wouldn’t because he looks way too stupid to think about others and he’s swimming in money which shows that he is selfish when it comes to money.”
The answer received two ticks, along with a note in red pen reading: “Good”.
We all know the dreaded red pen means the teacher is in town.
This hasn’t sat well with the Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who posted the images to Facebook and had this to say:
How dare you ask school children in class these questions? Forgive me but on Monday, we will act decisively against this school! May I thank the parents who brought this to our attention. Someone will fall, this we can assure you!”
The name of the school has yet to released but investigations into their conduct is now underway.
I’m not sure it matters what you think about JZ (our views are certainly no secret), we shouldn’t be imposing a certain political agenda on youngsters in Grade Six.
They’re 11 or 12 years old, and don’t need this thrust their way in a school environment. After all, in this day and age all they need to do is glance at a newspaper’s front page and they can make their own minds up.
