When 1994 arrived, South Africa unconsciously developed a myth that would give the people hope for about a decade. Kind of. We were called the “rainbow nation” in an effort to unify every citizen of every race, creed and culture
But now, everyone who actually cares knows it was all just a lie. You can’t force peace through a slogan.
A new documentary, to be aired on MTV this week, will be asking the youth of South Africa just what they think of the rainbow nation that we are supposedly living in.
The People versus the Rainbow Nation will put the country’s democracy on trial by focusing on the people of the future.
The 50-minute film follows the lives of four students from different backgrounds as it investigates the driving factors behind the #FeesMustFall movement. Director Lebogang Rasethaba speaks to these youths about the idea of a “rainbow nation” and other tough topics.
Rasethaba says:
We wanted to make a film that we wished someone had made when we were young – to help us make sense of the construct of society, [and to show us] how to engage the systems of power at play and where we as individuals fit in all of this.
The People vs the Rainbow Nation will broadcast on Thursday 21 April on MTV (DStv channel 130) at 9.15pm and on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) on April 27 at 12pm.
Do yourself a favour and just watch and listen.
