There are some pyromaniacs prowling the peninsula, and their targets seem to be either the Metrorail trains or the mountain ranges. The latest attack saw two trains along platforms 10 and 11 set alight on Saturday evening, destroying a total of 10 carriages and damaging five platforms.
It took 27 firefighters four-and-a-half hours to douse the flames and, although the cause of the fire is unknown, it is suspected to be arson.
However, the fire took place just two days after a strike organised by Metrorail workers belonging to the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) was declared illegal.
As someone who uses the train daily, there are always people complaining about how Metrorail is unreliabel and trains are always delayed – but these delays don’t stem from the institution’s lack of organisation, but rather from commuters injuring themselves from unsafe actions, cable theft, and arson.
And it’s so frustrating because that’s why we can’t have nice things.
Oh, no, wait, that’s because of corruption. Never mind.
