As another attempt to dethrone Jacob Zuma fails, more South Africans are casting their minds forward to the local government elections – will his antics cause the ANC grief at the polls?
That question will remain unanswered for the time being, although we do now at least have an official date. This from News24:
Local government elections will take place on August 3, President Jacob Zuma announced on Wednesday…
“The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will follow the necessary legal procedure to proclaim the date and undertake any other requirements.”
He then went on to encourage those eligible to vote to register on the weekend of April 9 and 10:
“We urge all those who are eligible to vote register to vote and those who have not checked their names to do so on Saturday and Sunday this weekend so that together we continue to re-affirm and deepen our democracy,” said President Zuma.
Should we hold our breath and hope that the country’s voters come to their senses? Perhaps not, but if there’s significant damage done to the ANC at the polls maybe they will realise the harm that towing the JZ line has done to their brand.
