It all started when Const. Michael Sanguinetti from Toronto and a partner gave some talk to 10, yes 10 people at York University’s safety forum at Osgoode. Keeping in mind that this guy’s surname is Sanguinetti, he said the following: “You know, I think we’re beating around the bush here. I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this, however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” That understandably did not go down well with the audience. Example:
Does she look happy to you? This is Darshika Selvasivam, a VP in the York Federation of Students.
According to Selvasivam, linking provocative clothing to sexual assault “is a huge myth” that blames the survivor. She also added that the found the use of the word “extremely alarming.” A university spokesperson also said the school was “surprised and shocked” by the comment, although it does have a good and collaborative relationship with police.
And our fellow, Const. Michael Sanguinetti? This is what he had to say in response to being heavily kakked out by his bosses:
“I made a comment which was poorly thought out and did not reflect the commitment of the Toronto Police Service to the victims of sexual assaults. Violent crimes such as sexual assaults can have a traumatizing effect on their victims…My comment was hurtful in this respect.” Bad cop! No donuts.
