So in the first half of the 20th Century there was a world war. During this time, hoards of people were kept in massive jails in which they eventually perished one way or another. Some survived, but what they lived through was horrendous, inhumane and dehumanising. Throughout Europe, there are many of these places, left as memorials of the evils that once occurred – not that they have deterred any country, including our own, from doing the same since.

So what do we do with these places of horrific memory? Well, one might be transformed into a luxury beach resort, complete with a museum just so that visitors can be reminded of the ills of the past. The chosen concentration camp may be a small one which only held 2 300 prisoners of which 130 were killed or starved to death, yet it is still a fortress of prejudice.

The concentration camp is situated on the small, uninhabited, rocky island of Mamula, which lies on the border between Montenegro and Croatia. It’s only 200 meters in diameter.

Now, the Montenegrin government has granted a 49-year lease to a Swiss-Egyptian developer at a price of $1.64 (R27) per square meter. They aim to invest around $16.3 million on the project as the resort will only include a swimming pool, yacht marina, spa, restaurants and dance floor. Ooooh, snazy.
