Well done, South Africa. You truly are messing up everything. This whole passport system insane and for once, I believe those who predicted South Africa will turn into Zimbabwe.
Now, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) has used a very international platform, Kanye West’s official website, to ultimately diss South Africa through a pre-recorded message that plays as soon as the site opens. In the first line, Yasiin references Kanye’s newly released single No More Parties In LA, and then raps his way through the insult.
Worst of it all? Kanye tweeted the link – and with more than 17 million followers, it’s pretty obvious word got out about how South Africa treated one of the coolest and most concious hip hop artists around.
Although Bey was using a world passport – check out what that is here – South Africa is not only listed as a country on their website as one that has accepted it before, but Bey says he personally has made use of the document.
A few of his lines express his dismay and disappointment with the country’s antics:
Please tell them no more parties in SA/Hey Home Affairs I don’t need to stay/Why don’t I feel safe/This isn’t an expression of fear.
I didn’t commit a crime. It’s curious. I haven’t broken any law. I’m being treated like a criminal.
I just want to leave this state. I just want to go home. South Africa interferes with my ability to move. I want to move and never return to this state again…I’m on the side of the right. People can believe what they want. What people think about me is none of my business.
Home Affairs is said to have an official media briefing later on Wednesday related to Bey’s arrest.
