So until April 18, when he will be required to appear for sentencing, Oscar Pistorius will be under house arrest at uncle Arnold’s Pretoria mansion. The palatial residence, located on Lawley Street in Pretoria, should have plenty to keep Oscar busy but his new bail conditions do open up a world of opportunity.
You see the thing is that Oscar can’t venture further than 20 kilometres from his uncle’s house. Shame man, but then hang on a second – a 20 kilometre radius in the heart of Pretoria is ample space.
Just check this map below and see for yourself…
Now it is true that Oscar will only be allowed out between 7AM and noon, but that’s plenty of time to catch a movie and explore the surrounding areas. He can of course ask for written permission to leave the house outside of those hours, something that can be granted by the investigating officer.
All of this means he may be cramming in the good times before that fateful day in April. So what do we think he’s going to be filling his days with? Let’s help ‘ol Oscar out then…
Well first up you could always visit the iconic Voortrekker Monument and learn about the history of the Afrikaner in South Africa. Go on then, you’ll have plenty of time to track that family tree all the way back when you’re locked up in a little cell.
Then there’s a nice relaxing stroll around the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, the chance to breathe in that fresh, free man air shouldn’t be passed up when it’s a limited resource.
If animals are more your thing Oscar, and let’s face it you won’t be near Kruger National Park for a while, maybe you should pop over to the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa. There are plenty of scaly characters on display so you should fit right in…
To power up maybe grab a bite on the go from one of THESE spots, there’s one just a few kilometres from home base too.
Maybe you want one more look at Fortress Loftus Versveld, the chance to sit alongside such Pretoria luminaries as Steve Hofmeyr and watch a Bulls forward pack rumble it up.
Now we recommend you don’t drive yourself around, I feel there might be a mixed reaction if someone pulls up next to you at a robot. Maybe grab an Uber Black and request tinted windows – you can’t put a price on privacy.
In case you’re feeling particularly ironic maybe meander down to Freedom Park, a look at our storied history as a nation and how we’re going about remembering the wrongs of our past. You’ll have more than enough time for contemplation in due course, for now maybe just enjoy being out and about.
A quick fashion tip – if you’re looking at matching that new ankle bracelet with something on the wrist we have you sorted. I know money is tight, what with that R10 000 bail and all, but surely you can afford R225 a month for a new Apple Watch?
You’ve probably had enough of theatre, every detail of your life played out in front of a global audience, but if you’d like to see some real actors (they can cry on cue, much like you did in court) then maybe head over to the Atterbury Theatre and catch a show. You’ll see that the Hofmeyr is appearing next week, many people hate him too so maybe you guys can relate?
Then there’s all the latest movie releases on show at the Nu Metro in Menlyn Park – Owen Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell star in an action-thriller called No Escape, sound like something you might be interested in? Maybe Bond’s Spectre is more up your alley, just make sure you’re catching the morning shows so you don’t upset your correctional officer.
See that, no need to despair just yet, you have until April 18 to roam your neighbourhood and make the most of your last days as a free man. After that, I’m afraid, it looks like a long haul on the inside.
