Chris Brown is a douche – there I said it, and I don’t think I’m alone in expressing that sentiment. It seems certain staff at The Daily Show with Trevor Noah agree, his scheduled appearance on the show later this week splitting opinion amongst the team.
It was only six years ago that Brown was convicted of felony assault against Rihanna, Chris getting off with just five years’ probation and six months of community service. Perhaps we should jog your memory as to what Rihanna looked like after one particularly severe beating…
He hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory since then either, a probation violation and a couple of violent outbursts to add to his rap sheet along the way. The Daily Beast tells of trouble with Trevor and the crew:
Several Daily Show staffers told The Daily Beast that Brown’s interview booking has become a cause for concern around the office. But while many staffers disapprove of the booking decision, host Trevor Noah allegedly hopes to use the interview to bring light to domestic abuse issues. Our sources confirmed that Noah brought up such a possibility during an all-hands meeting on Monday afternoon.
Noah’s own ex-stepfather violently abused his mother, at one point shooting her in the face and threatening to kill the young comedian.
Despite that personal history, however, some feel Noah might not be well-equipped to conduct a tough interview with Brown on domestic violence, considering his slew of jokes in poor taste on the subject. “Chris Brown’s FAME album is no#1 on iTunes,” Noah tweeted four years ago. “Rihanna is cancelling shows due to poor sales. I guess he beat her again.” At another time, he joked: “I woke up and my face was puffy and swollen- I looked like I was in the car with chris brown.”
Now we don’t need to drag up that old saga again, I think Trevor has addressed those with due diligence and grown as a comedian since those tweets missed the mark a few years back.
What is alarming to me is how Brown is so regularly and repeatedly given the time of day despite his horrendous track record. 5FM even played some of his music on Women’s Day this year, a slap in the face that you feel someone must have had a chuckle about behind the scenes.
Whether or not Trevor will grill him remains to be seen, although given how uncomfortable T-No often seems during interviews you doubt he will ask the hard-hitting questions Brown should be faced with daily.
