Sometimes Ozzie bashing gets a little tiresome, especially when they have a rather big match Saturday evening and we’re playing in the most pointless match in the Rugby World Cup schedule.
Other times though it’s just good ‘ol fashioned fun, like when a communications expert from their own country says their accent came about because they were pissed all the time.
His name is Dean Frenkel and he’s a public speaking and communication lecturer at Melbourne’s Victoria University. Here’s what he said according to the Telegraph:
In an impassioned call for Australian schools to teach verbal expression and delivery, Dean…said “drunken Aussie-speak” was formed generations ago but has continued to be passed on to children by sober parents.
“Our forefathers regularly got drunk together and through their frequent interactions unknowingly added an alcoholic slur to our national speech patterns… Aussie-speak developed in the early days of colonial settlement from a cocktail of English, Irish, Aboriginal and German – before another mystery influence was slipped into the mix.”
‘Struth mate, those fair dinkum Ozzies enjoy themselves a tipple and they aren’t afraid to butcher the Queen’s English. Just ask Winston Churchill:
“[it is] the most brutal maltreatment which has ever been inflicted upon the mother tongue of the great English speaking nations”.
In the interest of playing fair I’ll stop with there with the Ozzie bashing. Besides, all they have to do is point out our performances at any major cricket tournament and I’m going to be rather quiet.
