Guarding Jacob Zuma from danger must be a pretty taxing job, but in some tragic news it appears even when off duty the life of a presidential bodyguard is still fraught with danger.
Sergeant Mzwakhe John Magwaza was brutally killed Saturday morning, his killers setting the rondawel in which he slept alight. Magwaza was stationed at the Presidential Protection unit at eNtumeni in Eshowe‚ KwaZulu-Natal.
He managed to escape with the help of neighbours but was then attacked once more. TimesLive reports:
Magwaza emerged from the burning structure‚ and told his rescuers that there were people who wanted him dead‚ when he was shot at. He tried to run but he was wounded‚ and his body was found underneath his car‚ where he had tried to take shelter from his attackers.
The suspects fled the scene after killing Magwaza.
His death was announced by the Hawks, whose boss Lt Gen Mthandazo Ntlemeza appealed to the public for help and spoke of the organisation’s disgust at the attack:
“We are saddened by the murder of one of our own. He was dedicated to the safety of the state and that of fellow South Africans. The people responsible for his death must know that we are out to get them. We urge anyone with information about the killing or the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and help us restore justice”‚ said Ntlemeza.
One has to wonder what motives these murderers had for committing such a crime. We can only hope they are brought to justice so that they may answer some probing questions.
