Let’s create an entirely fictional situation that none of us have ever been involved in…
You’re driving along with a bunch of mates, headed into the great unknown with a smattering of illicit substances in the car, when you see it. Up ahead, there through the smoky haze of a pit stop about half an hour back, a couple of menacing looking police officers are patrolling a roadblock.
Now these guys spot your beady red eyes and yank you off to the side of the road, eager to search the car. It looks like your goose is cooked too, because they didn’t have to look very hard to find a few substances your mom wouldn’t be proud of.
So what the bloody hell are you going to do now, you’re up that creek without a paddle? Not entirely, because it turns out the police must meet certain requirements to start digging around.
2OV’s ‘Abstract Aimee’ spoke to famed Criminal Defence Attorney William Booth about what rights you hold if you’re caught in such a tricky predicament, the first in the six-part Lord of Law radio series. What he had to say made for very interesting listening.
See that, there might be hope yet if you can stop that paranoid mate in the back from ruining it for everyone. You can listen to that show in its entirety HERE for more helpful legal tips regarding road blocks.
William Booth will be back on the Abstract Aimee Show on Fridays between 3PM and 5PM in the not-too-distant future, although those exact dates are still be to be decided. He’s a busy man you see, he’s currently involved in the defence of the Guatemalan accused murderer who allegedly killed an American tourist in the local Camps Bay retreat.
For now be sure to check Abstract Aimee’s Facebook page for updates and follow 2oceansvibe Radio on Twitter.
Also, don’t do drugs.
