The lure of the British pound is strong, strong enough to lure Jake White into professing his interest in coaching the first host nation to be eliminated at the Rugby World Cup group stage (laugh at England HERE and HERE).
It’s true, 2007 World Cup winner Jake has publicly declared his interest in coaching a team that has yet to sack their current manager, although you have to think Stuart Lancaster’s days are numbered. Here’s the Guardian:
“England have everything going for them in terms of resources, players and history,” he said. “If they were genuinely interested and they approached me, of course I would be interested. It’s one of the biggest jobs in world sport and you’d be crazy not to consider it”…
“When I was with the Boks I was approached to put my name in for Rob Andrew’s job,” White is also quoted as saying… “Then they contacted me before appointing Martin Johnson and Stuart Lancaster. All three times, they’ve gone for English people. Generally it’s used as a means to make the other candidates look like they have a bit of credence.
“The last three World Cups must send a message: if you go for a coach who’s never coached international rugby, it’s going to be same old, same old. They’ve tried it with Andy Robinson, Martin Johnson and Stuart Lancaster. They have one of the biggest budgets in the world but their coaches only have a few years’ experience.”
You would think it might be impossible for Stuart Lancaster to feel any less secure in his job after these statements, White one of rugby’s most revered coaching figures who has taken a sub-standard team and moulded them into world champs before.
I reckon you start working on your CV Mr. Lancaster, Jake wants those pounds and I don’t think you’re the man to stop him.
