What is more romantic than hanging out with your lover under the moonlight? Hanging out with your lover under a supermoon’s light.
For the first time in 30 years, stargazers, night owls and space observers will have the chance to experience the supermoon, as well as a lunar eclipse that will line the sun, earth and moon up perfectly.
Although this phenomenon actually occurs once a year, this year the moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter in the sky before it is engulfed by an eclipse for more than an hour.
Better yet, the moon will be coated in a red hue and, known as the ‘Blood Moon’, will be the fourth of its kind this year.
The next supermoon/lunar eclipse is expected to occur in 2033.
Here’s a map of where the best spots to view it are:
South Africa is set to experience the eclipse in the early hours of Monday morning – around 04:50. So, although date night might only experience the blood-red supermoon, maybe if you’re lucky enough things will go so well you can enjoy the eclipse too.
What a tantalising affair.
