Come now Japan, you call that a fight? No one even got whacked with a hard hat, y’all could take some pointers from us.
That being said these aren’t really the kind of images you want to see beamed around the world, Japanese lawmakers getting rather hot under the collar during a legislative session.
The anger stems from an attempt by some sneaky buggers to turn a controversial security bill into law. Here’s Gawker:
Japan’s ruling party pushed contentious security bills through a legislative committee Thursday, catching the opposition by surprise and causing chaos in the chamber.
Opposition lawmakers surged toward the chairman’s seat as they realized something was up after ruling party legislators had gathered at the podium to protect him.
As the scrum intensified, ruling party lawmakers still in their seats stood up to signal their support for the legislation, though there didn’t appear to be an audible announcement of what they were voting on.
Whilst it all appears a bit playground-like the bills themselves were no laughing matter. Members were so keen to stop them being signed into law because the new legislation could ultimately result in Japan waging foreign wars.
Ever since World War II Japan have utilised their military only for self-defence purposes, whereas the new bill would allow them to ‘conduct military exercises alongside other countries like the U.S., regardless of whether Japan is under attack’.
Suppose that’s something worth fighting for.
