Another tragic story hit the headlines late last night when a petrol bomb attack on a bus killed two and injured 32 others, amongst them children.
The Intercape bus was making its way to the Eastern Cape, on the Onverwacht Road in the Strand at a garage, when the petrol bombing occurred. It is not known why the attacks were carried out but three separate bombs were thrown and a case of murder and attempted murder has been opened. Here’s IOL with more:
“There was no protest in the area. The driver said it was a petrol bomb. It was a double decker and the entire bus burnt out,” Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne said.
ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said 32 people were injured…
“Four people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Twenty-eight others were treated for minor to moderate smoke inhalation and burn wounds,” he said.
“Intercape confirms an incident in which one of its coaches was petrol-bombed in Strand, outside Cape Town. The incident is being investigated and the motive for this horrendous attack is not yet clear.
“There appears to have been no unrest in the area at the time. Intercape will provide an update as soon as possible.
Residents in the area spoke of the terror in the moments following the attack, people jumping out of windows to escape the fire. Let’s just hope whomever is responsible for these attacks is brought to justice before they can strike again, although if the local community gets hold of them first the police might not be needed.
