We know that South Africa’s bidding process for hosting international sporting events has something of a dirty name at present, what with that $10 million payment having aided the FIFA 2010 tournament reaching our shores.

Well now Durban can give itself a big pat on the back for becoming the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games, the 2022 event heading their way. Sport24 reports:

The announcement was made in Auckland, New Zealand on Wednesday…

Canadian city and previous host Edmonton withdrew from the 2022 race in February, citing oil price-related financial concerns, leaving the South African port as the only bidder.

“A historic decision for all of us and one that my commission completely endorses,” newly-elected Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Louise Martin told the organisation’s general assembly in Auckland.

Hell yeah guys, we basically steamrolled that one. Of course Fikile Mbalula was rather pleased about the whole thing…

I’m sure he wouldn’t have minded jetting off to Canada for the event, no doubt hanging out with Bieber and the other A-listers, but we get your excitement Fiks. Also rather stoked was Durban Mayor James Nxumalo:

“Africa is ready. Today marks a gigantic leap for the continent.”

Politicians and brevity, there’s a nice change.

Congrats Durban, some folks in the know say the positive economic effects for the city could amount to R25 billion. Perhaps you could put some of that towards signing a few decent rugby players, that might help with the mood of some locals.
