Tomorrow evening sees Heyneke Meyer announce the Sprinbok squad for the Rugby World Cup starting next month. Obviously that means rugby chat and rumour-mongering is at an all-time high, hearsay bandied about as truth after a few toots around the country.
Now we had one reader send us in a squad list he claims to have been given by someone in the know, that’s nothing new really. We then sent this list to one of our men on the inside and he seconded the selection, leading us to believe we’re onto something here.
Of course one doesn’t know what is going on there behind the scenes at SARU and it wouldn’t surprise any of us if there were last minute alterations from, erm, influences outside of Heyneke’s control. That being said let’s see who has made the list we’re privy to.
Forwards – Trevor Nyakane, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Eben Etzebeth, Victor Matfield, Schalk Burger, Duane Vermeulen, Tendai Mtawarira, Adriaan Strauss, Lood de Jager, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Francois Louw, Willem Alberts, Marcel van der Merwe, Schalk Brits, Frans Malherbe, Siya Kolisi.
Backs – Patrick Lambie, Bryan Habana, Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, JP Pietersen, Willie le Roux, Fourie du Preez, Handre Pollard, Lwazi Mvovo, Jean de Villiers, Zane Kirchner, Morne Steyn, Ruan Pienaar, Rudy Paige.
A quick look at who has been left out that might feel aggrieved then – Marcell Coetzee, Cobus Reinach, Vincent Koch, Jan Serfontein, Cornal Hendricks and the bloody unlucky Heinrich Brussouw, what does this man have to do?
Obviously we’re not in the habit of revealing our sources but it seems we have our paws on the 31 man squad entrusted with bringing home the bacon.
