Time to get angry folks, something happened on the internet and other people didn’t like it.
A Caitlyn Jenner-inspired Halloween costume based on her iconic Vanity Fair cover has now gone on sale, a costume that transgender supporters say makes a mockery of her journey to live as her true self. A petition has even been set up on Change.org, offering these words to producers Spirit Halloween:
To make a costume out of a marginalized [sic] identity reduces that person and community to a stereotype for privileged people to abuse. In this case, if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community.
Let’s take a gander at that costume then…
Some of the anger stems from the fact that the costume is under the ‘humorous’ section of the site, perhaps poking fun at Caitlyn rather than crediting a decision many the world over have labelled as brave. Spirit Halloween responded as follows via Mashable:
“Caitlyn Jenner has proven to be the most important real-life superhero of the year,” it said. “Spirit Halloween is proud to carry the costume that celebrates her”.
Whether the costume will be yanked from sale to the public has yet to be decided, but the fact that is has irked many is obvious. Maybe people should stick to mocking celebs that everyone loves to hate, just seems safer that way nowadays.
