Another South African beauty is making herself known to the world – but this time as a credible singer/songwriter – with some badass rapping skills.
Hailing from Pietermaritzburg, Candice Pillay made her way over to the states when she was just 19 and she has just collaborated with Dr. Dre on two tracks off his new album, Compton. Candice is making waves not only with her gorgeous body and angelic vocals, but also her intrinsic fashion sense. Having lived in the US for 14 years now, she is finally making tracks and working with big names such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar and Eminem.
Recently, MTV News chatted to her about working with the legends:
[Dr. Dre] really made an impression on me from the moment I met him. Of course, he’s a legendary guy. We all look up to him. You never know what to expect when you meet someone of his caliber. But, from the first meeting, he was one of the most humble guys I’ve met. I’ve worked with a lot of people in this industry and besides the fact that he’s extremely talented, he’s down to earth.
But we scoped her out and found a better interview (obviously) from April, when American Oxygen, the track she wrote for Rihanna, had just been released. In one segment, Candice explains the meaning of the song to her:
Oh my god, you know what – it’s everything to me. People don’t really know how difficult it is for immigrants to come out here and I’ve been working for fourteen years to establish my citizenship and bring my family out here. It’s a struggle and especially because you have these big dreams and you’re a foreigner in a different country and you’re relying on yourself and your talent. It’s really hard for someone that’s not from this country to be up with the big players, it’s a dream a lot of people have – it’s a constant battle – I feel like that song speaks to that whole struggle and the victory at the end of it.
