Solo travelling is easily one of the most boring things there is, especially if it’s long-haul. Once I’ve exhausted the duty free shops and tried on every single pair of shades at Sunglass Hut, I inevitably find myself people watching from the comfort of my pleather lounge chair. And by people watching I mean perving. People always seem to be so much better looking in airports, or is that just me?
In any case, there have been occasions where I’ve exchanged furtive glances with a handsome fella, but obviously never had the balls to do anything about it. If that sounds familiar, you’re in luck – there’s now an app called MileHi, that allows travellers to ‘connect’ with each other.
Not surprisingly, many people are assuming this is just aviation Tinder, helping people ‘get some’ mid-flight. (Maybe there’s a gap in the market for aquatic Tinder…hmmm.)
But the app’s developer, Richard Lloyd, insists this isn’t the case. As CNN reports:
MileHi is a very good name; it’s very catchy,” he says. “Obviously it’s got a connotation, but the idea of the app was really around business or networking, not dating.”
The app uses flight numbers rather than GPS, with one of the functions being that people track each other via their flight number (not creepy at all).
MileHi has done well so far, even though similar apps have ended up tanking, as it’s a pretty niche market.
I don’t think there’s any bigger niche than the travel market, with all the numbers of people that do travel for all their differing reasons,” he says. “This is very much about a distinct group of people that are flying from the same place to the same destination. And that’s really sort of what we’re of honing in on.”
Indeed. Still sounds like hook-up help to me.
I’ll probably stick to Tinder but if you get in on the MileHi club let us know if it works…
