The world’s most dangerous drug lord is on the run. Again. ‘El Chapo’ Guzman has escaped one of Mexico’s most “secure” prisons through the mac daddy of underground escape tunnels. As this nifty diagram from The Wall Street Journal illustrates, El Chapo made his exit in style – apparently this bad boy even had air-con!
But while this may all look bananas, it’s actually not that surprising. El Chapo’s cartel has been cited as the biggest single supplier of coke, meth, heroin and marijuana to the USA, and it’s well documented that one of his favoured methods of transportation is through, you guessed it, tunnels. We also know that he used an elaborate tunnel system to move around between safe houses, as this incredible clip shows.
Did I mention this is the second time he’s escaped a maximum security jail? The first was back in 2001 when he bribed guards to let him get in a laundry basket.
As NBC News reports:
Guzman’s latest escape is “shocking,” Mike Vigil, former chief of international operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration and counternarcotics director for Mission Essential, a Pentagon and intelligence contractor, told NBC News.
I’m not sure what’s that shocking about one of the world’s most powerful criminals and proven master of escape and of tunnels… escaping through a tunnel.
Here’s a photo of the half-built house El Chapo emerged through on his way to freedom.
Officials said if he wasn’t caught within 48 hours they’d probably never find him, so (for now at least) it looks like the king of the meth superlab is having the last laugh.
