The war between cyclists and motorists has been raging for some time in Britain, and while it may not sound that serious, a recent spate of targeted attacks have given it a far more sinister tone. Animosity between the two ‘gangs’ has always been high, but usually within the confines of road rage, lashings of verbal abuse and the odd bus attack.
If getting from A to B without being crushed by an 11 tonne vehicle isn’t enough of a challenge, cyclists are now finding themselves contending with vicious booby traps designed to bring them off their bikes and cause serious injury.
Alec James was left with cuts and gashes when he was thrown off his bike after cycling over strategically placed drawing pins and tacks.
Other cyclists have discovered wire and fishing line strung up between trees, apparently in an attempt to decapitate them as shown by this Twitter user:
There are ongoing investigations into what is driving these anonymous attacks, as the Guardian reports:
Some campaigners worry that the sabotage incidents are linked to a public and media narrative in which cyclists are demonised equally as both anarchic lawbreakers and smug, humourless killjoys, sausage thighs squeezed into unsightly DayGlo Lycra.
