With great fame comes great amounts of cash, and with great amounts of cash comes some pretty awesome assets. Yet, as any reasonable adult knows, you can’t have awesome assets without having the right insurance policy to go along with it.
Over the years, celebrities have forked out millions to insurance for some rather strange reasons. We’ve found you three of the weirdest and most wonderful stories below:
Shirley MacLaine versus The Aliens
Some of you may not recognise the name, but Shirley MacLaine is a Hollywood actress with an Academy Award and five Golden Globe Awards behind her name. Along with her acting career, Shirley has made quite a name for herself among UFO and extraterrestrial enthusiasts after describing UFO sightings and alien encounters in her 2008 book Sage-ing While Age-ing. She remains so convinced that little green men are out to get her that she took out a whopping $25 million insurance policy against any and all alien abductions. A simple life insurance policy seems like a more reasonable option in the face of an alien abduction, but who are we to judge? Shirley isn’t the only one to have taken out alien insurance; there are an estimated 20,000 Americans who have taken out this exact same policy. Talk about first world problems.
Mr Bean, Creator of the World’s Greatest Car Insurance Claim
Rowan Atkinson is best known for playing a lovable, goofball mute in the British comedy series, Mr Bean. While Mr Bean is known for driving a MINI Cooper, Mr Atkinson prefers life on the fast and expensive side. Back in August 2011 he took his McLaren F1 for a casual, Sunday 150 mp/h spin through the back roads of Peterborough, England. Unfortunately he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road into a tree, causing some major damage. That’s ‘major damage’ in the sense of ‘no car has ever cost this much to fix anywhere, ever’ kind of major damage. The car’s repair bills came to a whopping £910 000 (R17 682 917). This is the largest car repair bill ever to have been issued and, considering that the car cost £640,000 (R12 436 337) at the time of purchase, something doesn’t seem right. Maybe Rowan Atkinson needs to take a page from Mr Bean’s book and stick with the MINI Cooper in the future. or get some affordable car insurance.
The $370,000 (R3 517 978) Australian Moustache
Merv Hughes was a bowler for the Australian cricket team from 1985 to 1994, and was one of the most recognized cricketers of his time. Being a bowler, it would make sense to perhaps insure his bowling arm, right? Without an arm he can’t play cricket, so that would make sense, right? Well, no. Merv Hughes, in fact, had his moustache insured for an incredible $370,000 Australian dollars (R3 517 978). Nobody knows for a fact why he put his handlebar ‘tache under insurance. The only plausible explanation is that, like Samson before him, he derives all of his cricketing strength from his majestic face furniture, and, without it, he would left completely powerless.
