Off the back of what was a tragic weekend regarding shark attacks in the Western Cape, the Garden Route seeing two separate incidents, footage has emerged from a pretty epic surf video that shows one man getting a little too close for comfort.
The film, shot on the Garden Route itself, is just over four minutes long but there is one place you’re going to want to pay close attention to. Here’s Captain Kai’s World with a description:
The place is one of the most beautiful stops on the Garden Route and there are waves up and down the coast. That said, there are and always have been a large population of Great White sharks in the area. The local surfers simply get on with it, even when sharing the lineup with one guy in a grey suit. They have accepted that they share their chosen environment with this apex predator and thus get on with the job at hand, enjoying the ocean as much as possible. Having said all this, if the surfer at 02:37 actually saw what he nearly jumped on top of, he may have stained his wetsuit… that is one big shadow.
Having spent Saturday morning watching Great Whites breach between False Bay and Simon’s Town we should be happy that they don’t see us as a primary food source.
Our condolences to the family and friends of the two surfers attacked over the weekend, here’s hoping we don’t see more incidents like these any time soon.
