So! Pretend we’re having that bit of dialogue from Pulp Fiction where we talk about Burger King burgers being called ‘royale’ in France, except we’re talking about North Korea, and they call them “minced meat and bread,” to avoid referring to the uniquely American hamburger. Also, this is a new thing.
Not content with being the greatest golfer in the known universe, Kim Jong Il also wants to be known as a culinary pioneer.
Man, I’m not totally sure how “minced meat and bread” hasn’t existed in North Korea before, even bearing in mind the protracted food shortage, but hey. ‘Samtaesung and Cool Beverages’ is the fancy new restaurant in Pyongyang that makes the not-hamburgers, and it’s owned by Kim Kyong Hui, younger sister of Kim Jong Il. So there’s that.
And it’s pretty popular! The place is a 24/7 restaurant where reservations need to be made a day in advance. And this is bearing in mind that the majority of North Korea can’t afford “minced meat and bread” or “baked dough” (waffles).
Way to stick it to the decadent west, man.
