Sunday saw tennis world number one Novak Djokovic secure another career title at the Italian Open. Djokovic defeated Swiss ace Roger Federer in straight sets on the clay surface and would have been delighted with the win ahead of the season’s first grand slam, the French Open, which begins this Sunday.
As with most sporting victories the celebrations include the ceremonial champagne moment, although this is one that Novak may well want to forget. As you can see from the video above he managed to fire the cork straight into his own face, which when you consider how many tournaments he has won is something of a surprise.
Despite the setback he was still in fine spirits with this from Stuff:
So far, this is the best season of my life…I don’t know how it will go at Roland Garros [French Open], but I’m very confident.
I’m playing with great joy and concentration and I hope to continue. This has been a very exciting week and today was my best match. It’s always a big challenge to play Roger and obviously I’m very pleased.
I suggest if he wants to pip both Roger and the ‘King of Clay’ Rafa Nadal, he work on his technique. We can’t fault his love for the bubbly but he will need all his faculties to keep his winning streak going.
