Just when you thought you had heard it all, they go and toss another spanner into the works.
Those of us who suffered through the fight live, and then saw Manny Pacquiao say post-bout that he thought he had won would more than likely have disagreed. Sure he landed a few punches but Mayweather just sat back, bided his time and used his longer reach and quicker hand speed to rack up the points.
Or did he? Everyone loves a controversy theory, and the folks over at Deadspin think they may have uncovered a ripper. Let’s have a look at the fight scorecard according to the judges.
Yeah, that’s pretty decisive then – the winner by unanimous points decision is Floyd ‘Woman Beater’ Mayweather, simple. But then we add colour into the mix:
The “corner” notations above each column’s scores have Mayweather in the red corner and Pacquiao in the blue corner. This is the opposite of what actually happened, as can be seen in photos and video of the fight: Mayweather was in the blue corner, while Pacquiao was in the red.
…the three judges actually scored the bout a victory for Pacquiao, but because the corner notation was reversed, inadvertently awarded the fight to Mayweather. And like in the classic Marisa Tomei accidental-Oscar conspiracy theory, once the (incorrect) results had been announced, officials were supposedly too embarrassed to correct the error.
I mean who could argue with that logic right? That certainly holds more weight than these official stats from the fight:
Ah well, those conspiray theories are fun to admire from a distance. Stay tuned for how we faked the moon landing and the FBI’s intensive Yeti cover-up mission.
