The cops in the US seriously need to get down off their self-claimed thrones and learn to treat the public with a fraction more respect. This unsuspecting Uber driver was lucky enough to have two awesome passengers in his car when a cop went cray-cray on him.
Here’s what went down:
In an unmarked car, the policeman was allegedly attempting to park without using his blinker at a green light. (His reverse lights weren’t on. Likely double parked without hazards on.) The Uber driver pulled around and gestured that he should use his blinker, casually and non-offensively, and kept driving us. The policeman aggressively pulls up behind us and this is what happens.
Now go and watch the video, and ask yourself what human feels he can speak to another human like that.
To quote the cop: “I don’t know what f*cking planet you think you’re on right now! I don’t care what you have to say! Do you understand that? People are allowed to park their cars on the side of the street without your interference, and then your opinion about what’s going on.”
The driver, who is foreign, can be heard trying to apologise to the cop (as his passengers suggest he do to try keep the peace, even though he did nothing wrong) to which the cop replies:
The only reason you’re not in handcuffs and going to jail and getting summonses in the precinct is because I have things to do. That’s the only reason that’s not happening. Because this isn’t important enough for me. You’re not important enough.
I don’t know about you but I love Uber. I get from A to B safely, the drivers are always cheerful and lovely (I’ve even been given dating advice by one) and often they’re not South African and you get to chat about their home country and learn a bit. Just remember, everyone is human, and no one deserves this kind of treatment just because you’re in a bad mood because your dog peed on your Persian rug.
The good news is that the cop, Detective Patrick Cherry, has been “temporarily stripped of his gun and badge and placed on ‘modified duty'”. He used to be a part of an “elite joint terrorism task force” and now he is on desk duty. Ha.
