Just what value can you place on a human life? We have all heard the horror stories the world over about how people have been murdered for the meagre contents of their wallets and, on the other side of the spectrum, some celebrities have outlandish insurance policies on various body parts (Keith Richards’ middle finger – $1,6 million).

Now a few days ago Lufthansa came under fire for offering the families of victims in the Germanwings crash just $54 000 each. They have since backtracked, with the Times of Israel reporting the following:

Lufthansa said its insurers are setting aside $300 million to deal with possible costs resulting from last week’s crash of a Germanwings jet in the French Alps, in which 150 people died.

Lufthansa spokeswoman Kerstin Lau confirmed a report on the set-aside in the daily Handelsblatt on Tuesday. She said $300 million is the amount currently reserved to deal with “all costs arising in connection with the case.”

Now obviously all of that money is not set to head straight to the victims’ families but there’s no doubt that any amount they put forward will be dissected and criticised. As we all know Lufthansa are up against it after it came to light that Amdreas Lubitz crashed the plane intentionally so they could well use some positive publicity.

Unfortunately, as each day unfolds and more details come to light, the prospect of any positivity arising from this situation is all but non-existent.
