Hope no one is flying to New York this weekend, because I’d be a bit worried (even though I am flying on Friday 13th next week!).
A Delta Air Lines jet with 132 people on board crashed into a snow bank at La Guardia Airport yesterday whilst it was landing on runway 13 (well there we go…). The plane came to a halt with its nose through the fence and over the waters of Flushing Bay.
Whilst it is not known why the jet skidded off, I’m pretty sure we can assume it had something to do with the snow and -3C (26F) temperatures. Maybe a little patch of ice?
The NYCFD said 24 people were reported to have ‘non-life-threatening injuries’ (only three were taken to hospital), but passengers still got a huge fright.
One of the things that really scared passengers was that when they landed, there was so much water being pumped onto the aircraft by fire crews – because of fears of blazes – that many believed the plane had gone into the water.
A former pilot spoke to Fox News explained how the 7 000 ft runway is a “short” runway and that “[pilots] always have to make sure we are right on with our air speed and our configuration. If you don’t hit it just right, you really do need to go around. Unfortunately, they may not have had the runway cleared properly”.
Also, this guy…
Passengers were taken to the safety of the airport terminals in buses.
