What do you do when you’re 33-years old and are already a director, filmmaker, artist, designer, creative consultant and DJ based in New York City? Why, you join forces with PUMA, of course.
New York based creative Vashtie Kola has teamed up with PUMA for a debut SS15 collaboration consisting of a range of Ready To Wear unisex separates and a twist on classic footwear.
As I said, Kola is multi-talented. She has become a style icon with worldwide influence and is known for being at the forefront of New York’s Downtown scene.
She’s a proper New York girl: Vashtie symbolises the intersection of drive, talent and culture, strengthening the notion that New York is the Mecca for fostering creative minds. PUMA has played an integral role in scenes that inspire Vashtie’s creativity, iconic silhouettes such as the PUMA States have been ever-present on the streets of New York since the 70s when they were embraced by emerging sub-cultures.
Her style takes inspiration from the urban music and lifestyle scene of the 80s and 90s. The first collaboration with PUMA pulls on this and takes a trip down memory lane to the dawn of New York’s B Boy culture. Paying homage to the era, key classic PUMA styles including States and T7s have be reworked in fresh new materials for SS15.
When PUMA reached out I was immediately interested in this collaboration as I grew up following the brand. As a child I was drawn toward skate boarding and alternative music and looked to PUMA for fashion trends. I’m excited to create this collection that pays homage to my childhood and New York’s underground scene.
Here’s a sneaky peak for ya’ll…
You like it, don’t ya? Grab your own piece from the collection – it will be available March 9th 2015 at PUMA SELECT Stores in Bree Street, Cape Town and Braamfontein, Johannesburg; as well as Shelflife, X-Trend, Dip Street Store, Queens, Soho, Brands Unlimited and Lyme.
