Another day, another award for Cape Town. Sheesh guys, give it a rest already, we get it…
This time around we have been placed in the top five most eco-friendly cities in the world by the BBC. Eco-friendly you say, what criteria do they use?
…the world’s greenest cities score high marks in CO2 emissions, transportation options, water and waste management, and overall environmental governance.
The other cities that have made the list are Vancouver (Canada, pictured above), Curitiba (Brazil), Copenhagen (Denmark) and San Francisco (duh, ‘Merica). We’re going to breeze through the other four and get to why we are the bee’s knees. The BBC again:
In 2008, Cape Town started using energy from the country’s first commercial wind farm and now aims to get 10% of its energy from renewable resources by 2020…
More bike routes are becoming available, farmers markets are very popular, and chefs definitely place a premium on sourcing ingredients and produce locally…
The most bike-friendly areas to live within the city are definitely Seapoint and Greenpoint, where there is great cycle infrastructure…
Many people living in our community [Hout Bay] have solar energy systems and grow their own vegetables.
Magnificent guys, let’s give ourselves a good pat on the back. Take a moment to bask in the glory that is this beautiful city and then return to your desk, where you can count down the hours until the weekend begins. Viva!
