The word ‘feminism’ gets thrown around a lot these days. Some people attach negative connotations to the word whereas, in its purest sense, it is really just the movement to establish equal political, economic and social rights for women (disclaimer: wording carefully selected from various online dictionaries). I think we can all agree that’s not a bad thing, kapeesh?
But then you come across someone as daft as this woman, who does the entire movement she claims to represent a whole lot of harm. According to her blog, a woman known only as Lena claims that she aborted her baby when she found out it would be a boy. The Metro quotes her as follows:
I was in shock, I started crying, weeping at the thought of what I was about to curse the world with…
I don’t hate men, I hate the patriarchy, what men, and even some women, turn into, I wasn’t going to let that happen with my offspring. The chances were greater that it would with a male, it was unacceptable…
If the curse returns, I would do the exact same thing all over again.
Yeah, you might want to rethink your take on motherhood, Lena. While you’re at it you should probably stop calling yourself a ‘feminist’, there are other terms for people such as yourself that do a valid movement a lot less disservice. I leave the final word to Barbara Kay, a Canadian columnist:
