Usually when you hear about a 7-year-old surviving a crash it is as a result of their parents taking the training wheels off the bike too soon. And they wail for days, because kids are wimps.
Well, meet Sailor Gutzler then. This remarkable story began when a plane carrying Sailor, her parents and sister went down in the woods of Kuttawa, Kentucky. The 7-year-old was the sole survivor of the crash, with the other passengers killed on impact.
Now this is where the story really gets interesting. Sailor managed to traverse the tricky terrain, usually only frequented by loggers and hunters, in the dead of night wearing just a T-shirt and shorts . This from the Daily Beast:
In the dark, after extracting herself from the upside-down airplane [she] plunged down the ridge into a hollow filled with thorns, up a second ridge, down into a briar patch even thicker than the first, up into a clearing, into a pasture, over a creek, through another pasture, across a barbed-wire fence, through another briar patch, and up to the house of Larry Wilkins, the man who called 911 and who cleaned the blood off Sailor.
Of course the tragedy remains that her immediate family have all passed away, but you have to admire this young girl’s pluck and tenacity. I can think of a few kids who would have curled up into a ball with plenty of snot en trane, and with good cause to do so.
