In a story that follows incredibly closely to that of Michael Brown, yesterday saw a white NYPD cop being let off on charges concerning choking to death a 43-year old African American man.
Daniel Pantaleo arrested Eric Garner for allegedly selling loose cigarettes, and put him in a chokehold, which is an illegal manoeuvre for a police officer to use. In court, Pantaleo “sought to characterize his actions as a maneuver taught at the Police Academy”.
In the video you can hear, very clearly and numerous times, Garner calling out that he cannot breathe.
An autopsy by the city’s medical examiner found that Mr. Garner’s death was a homicide resulting from the chokehold and the compression of his chest by police officers.
Wednesday saw peaceful but angry demonstrators throughout Manhattan and Washington, with Obama having to step in and say a few words.
“When anybody in this country is not being treated equally under the law, that is a problem and it’s my job as president to help solve it.”
