Do you have ANY idea what went down in the National Assembly yesterday? Basically it turned into a small, in-house circus for 20 minutes…
It all started when National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete wanted to change the order of the day’s proceedings at the very last minute, which the MPs did not agree with.
The DA’s “chief whip”, Michael Walters, objected, saying that “Mbete was misreading the rule she used to come to her decision and that she can’t make such a ruling”. Mbete suggests that Walters leave the NA, and that’s when things get exciting – DA MP’s rise from their chairs and begin chanting “You must go!”.
Just watch from the 15 minute mark, through to 25… You will be highly entertained and saddened.
It seems as though as long as you’re in the National Assembly, you can stand and speak about absolutely anything your heart desires.
After a while, it is clear that Mbete is over it, and she is replaced as the speaker for the day by Lechesa Tsenoli.
As the day continues, Economic Freedom Fighters MP Ngwanamakwetle Mashabela stands to speak at the podium, calling Jacob Zuma a “thief” (you can scroll to the 8:30:00 mark for this) with regards to the Grand Inga Hydro Project, which results in her being asked to please step down.
Mashabela would not be moved when sergeant-at-arms Regina Mohlomi tried to escort her from the podium. Police arrived minutes later – tugging at Mashabela – who could be heard shouting “I don’t want to be touched”.
MP’s from all parties objected to her being removed and jumped to her defense. This started an actual fist fight, with DA MP’s being injured. They will be pressing charges against the police.
It’s not clear who called police into the NA, as they have “no jurisdiction over the National Assembly chamber”.
“I think this is the lowest point in the post democratic history of this country. We’ve reached a crisis,” said [DA MP John] Steenhuisen.
BONUS – To add to the day, the minister of small business development, Lindiwe Zulu, got into an altercation with an EFF member outside the NA chamber. Zulu was eventually escorted away. Watch the video of that HERE.
