Would you like to take a guess at how many parcels are just sitting at your local post office? I popped into mine to post some cards to the UK the other day and was told to just go to PostNet. They wouldn’t even take my mail. And this is why:
Imagine trying to find two itty bitty envelopes in that mess? And that is just ONE post office. Over 15 million parcels were handed into the post office in one day last week. There’s a backlog of 11.4 million items at just one post office in Joburg. Where does one even start to sort that out?
IF the strike ends next week, most post offices should clear the backlog by Christmas, and the rest by January.
“Mismanagement, coupled with allegations of fraud and nepotism, have dogged the South African Post Office (Sapo) for years and unions have complained that management refused to negotiate with them, with the result that the largest of the three labour organisations, the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU), called and maintained a strike almost three months ago.”
Take the opportunity and hand deliver all your mail this month. It will end in an around the world expedition. What fun!
