Never a dull day at Stellenbosch, as a new scandal has erupted on campus and indeed social media. These guys donned ‘blackface’ for a fancy dress event, as they pretended to be the famous tennis sisters, Venus and Serena Williams.
According to news24
Stellenbosch University is the latest tertiary institution to find itself at the centre of a ‘blackface’ scandal after a photo showing two students covered in a black paint-type substance started being shared on social media.
In the photo the two students are supposed to be dressed as US tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams. They were attending a 21st party.
The caption on the photo reads: “Hanging out with the Williams Sisters [sic] last night at the Boli’s 21st. Let’s hope they don’t get kicked out the varsity for this one!”
The photo was widely shared on Twitter with many calling for the students concerned to be kicked out of the university.
Ja, not your finest moment, boys.

This latest blackface scandal comes hot on the heels of a recent University of Pretoris skandaal, also featuring ‘blackface.’
Two South African students posted a photo of themselves in blackface, prompting a school disciplinary response and reigniting a social media conversation on racism in South Africa. The photo of two women from the University of Pretoria dressed as black domestic workers was deleted from Facebook, but was swiftly disseminated on Twitter. A university official said (link is external) that the students would be disciplined for harming the school’s reputation.
