UCT professor Tim Noakes is back in the news with more claims that his “Real Meal Revolution” is not the correct way to be eating.
Noakes’ diet, or eating plan, focuses on eating high-fat, low-carb foods.
In a letter to the Cape Times, Dr. Wim de Villiers, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UCT, says that the long term impact of this diet could actually be detrimental.
“Noakes is making outrageous, unproven claims about disease prevention.”
De Villiers and three others have signed the letter, and say that humans should be eating a balanced diet from all food groups.
Noakes has spoken at parliament in Cape Town, warning MPs of the rising levels of obesity in South Africa, and how his diet could change this. Whilst parliament has heard Noakes a few times, it does not mean they are “entering into any kind of partnership with him” says Luzuko Jacobs, a parliamentary representative.
“The university has continually misrepresented his message about the diet.”
Noakes says his book is backed up with scientific evidence of his interpretations. The Real Meal Revolution is not just a recipe book with pretty pictures – it has guides and reasoning behind every food group decision.
Maybe we should all just take a minute to chill and remember the age old saying, “everything in moderation”.
