A shocking stat revealed that 8,000 women died in India in 2013 as a result of not being able to pay Dowry.

Dowry is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to her husband or his family in marriage, and the on-going practice of dowry in South Asia is still an extremely controversial subject.

While women’s movements have made progress with establishing the rights of women in India, the country’s Supreme Court has ruled that Anti-dowry statutes (aimed to protect women against violence) are often used by “disgruntled wives” to prosecute their husbands and in-laws.

The ruling threatens to undermine hard-won battles by the women’s movement in recent decades, advocates of the law say. But it has given a huge boost to the growing number of families who are saying the dowry laws unfairly favor female complainants.
