The Costa Concordia cruise ship, which hit the reef and sunk on the Italian coastline back in 2012, has floated for the first time since the salvage operation to remove the ship begun.

Giant tanks were fastened to the ship, which have been used as flotation devices to bring the sunken portion of the ship above the water.

Italy’s environmental minister told reporters that the operation will only be finished when the ship is successfully transported to the port of Genoa for scrapping
