This Unmade Bed Just Sold For R40 Million

We can not believe they actually managed to sell this increasingly gross mess valuable artwork for R40 Million! Don't tidy your room, turn it into art like this and become famous!

We can not believe they actually managed to sell this increasingly gross mess valuable artwork for R40 Million! It seemed unlikely when Charles Saatchi suggested it several weeks back, but he was spot on!

What gross mess, you may ask. Okay, we suppose we should be accurate and call it a piece of contemporary art, but it is a slightly gross, messy piece of art – did we mention it is essentially a whole bedroom in size?

Tracey Emin’s modern artwork My Bed has been sold at auction in London for £2.5m.

The work features an unmade bed surrounded by a floor littered by empty vodka bottles, cigarette butts and condoms.

It went under the hammer at Christie’s after being put up for sale by the art collector Charles Saatchi with a guide price of between £800,000 and £1.2m, but ended up going for £2.2m – or £2.54m including buyer’s premium.

So, you have just bought this bed and its accompaniments… cool (if that is your sort of thing)! What we really want to know is WHERE on earth are you going to display it?

Francis Outred, head of post-war contemporary art at Christie’s, told a press conference after the sale: “I think it will end up going to a very good place. “We can’t announce it but I think it is going to end up somewhere important so watch this space for an announcement.”

Artwork is a personal choice, sure, but are old used condoms and dirty knickers perhaps getting a bit too personal?
