You can sleep when you are dead, they say. Rubbish… it is going to be a lack of sleep that will probably kill you! We are all for a few late night parties and living life to the very fullest but getting enough shut-eye is vital to… well, to being alive let alone optimally function.
Too many of us are not getting enough sleep and the biggest cause (as The Daily Beast found) is, surprise surprise, daytime stress.
But if you feel like you are indeed living the holiday and your stress levels are still non-existant, try some of these sleep monitoring devices to decode your problem.
By far the most accurate (mostly because of the sheer amount of sensory data it collects) is of course the sleep lab. However, for us mere mortals, this plethora of sensors and electrodes is simply ridiculous – imagine trying to put all of these on after a night out?
You would probably end up strangling yourself with all the wire – best leave this to the professionals. There are various options you can try at home but the best device hinges on what your problem is.
So, what device is right for you? It depends on your particular problem, and a bit of self-hacking is necessary to figure out the issue. The first step is diagnosis. If duration of sleep is your problem, then a simple actigraph measure, like a smartphone sleep tracker, may work. If it’s a greater problem than just duration, I’d recommend trying the Basis watch for monitoring REM and deep sleep.
If you are tired of suffering your insomnia, give the full report a read at The Daily Beast or get in touch with a sleep lab – they aren’t that creepy, why wouldn’t you want someone to watch you sleep?
