Meriam Ibrahim’s case is a well publicised one and has gained international attention. She has been sentenced to 100 lashings and then to be hung if her appeal (currently under-way) is not successful. The international community has put huge pressure on the Sudanese government to release her. Her decision not to convert to Islam should not be punishable by death under international law. If her appeal, along with international demands for her release is not successful, she may be flogged like this woman (WARNING: very graphic and utterly barbaric).
Having given birth to her second child only two weeks ago, Meriam is still recovering in prison in Khartoum. It is unclear what the fate of her children will be.
International human rights organisation REDRESS told MailOnline that pressure needed to be maintained on Sudan to make sure that Meriam is freed.
Lutz Oette, of REDRESS, said: ‘This may well be the fate that awaits Meriam unless her appeal is successful. The video shows how flogging violates the dignity of its victims who are more often than not women.
‘REDRESS calls for an end to this practice, which is cruel, inhuman and degrading.’
At present, the outcome of this case rests on the status of her appeal. To read more about this case click here.
