We often let our guard down when enjoying the sandy shoreline, but one must keep vigilant at all times, as a man and his young son were attacked on Sunrise beach, Cape Town, over the weekend.
The crime took place on Sunday afternoon, when the 33-year-old man was walking with his 2-year-old son and two dogs along the beach, when they were jumped by ten men.
The gang of men attacked the father with planks as they tried to get his mobile phone. The father was just concerned about protecting his son.
Thankfully, the child wasn’t injured, and while the phone was taken, it was tracked down in a township near the beach area.
The iPhone was found in the possession of an 18-year-old man who claimed that the gang had asked him to keep the phone. The young man was arrested for robbery.
The attack was just hours after a fisherman had been shot dead by robbers on Strandfontein Beach, which is on the same stretch of coastline.
The Police have said that they will step up patrols in the area, but it’s a good reminder to be safe and aware that these incidences are not exclusive to “dangerous areas”.
