The battle against Genetically Modified (GM) foods is only escalating, as a new report has released some absolutely horrifying revelations about our daily staples:
According to the African Centre for Biosafety (ACB), not only are the bread manufacturing cartels fixing prices and cutting out the little guys, they are hiding potentially harmful GM ingredients in their products, with no indication on the packaging of what lurks within.
The African Centre for Biosafety (ACB) has today brought into sharp focus the white bread industry in South Africa with the release of its new report ‘GM Contamination, Cartels and Collusion in South Africa’s Bread Industry.’ The report shows that the white bread tested contains high levels of Monsanto’s genetically modified (GM) soya and that most companies are unashamedly flouting GM labelling laws and undermining the consumer’s right to know.
So, unless companies are actually going out of their way to source non-GM ingredients, you are pretty much guaranteed to be taking in some of that sexual, mutated goodness. Yum!
The ACB report shows that the chemical used in the production of GM soya, called glyphosate, has been linked to numerous health risks including increased risk of chronic kidney disease, birth defects in humans and animals and spontaneous abortions.
The only brand that was reported to be making the appropriate legally required effort in the white bread that was tested was Sasko. Even good-old Woolies with their public commitment to going GMO-free, boasted an alarmingly high score on the GM scale for their white bread.
Naughty, Woolies?
We have to assert our right to know what we are putting into our bodies as consumers, especially when it comes to the basics that we are relying on for daily sustenance.
Is it normal that I suddenly feel like a burger?
[thanks Jess]
