Here’s the deal: Banks basically steal money from you. This is the conclusion one comes to when considering that every time one takes out a loan, the interest rates associated with borrowing money mean that you end up paying back a shit ton more money than what was initially lent to you. Now put yourself in the position of a young woman seeking a higher education. You’re 18 years old, middle-class and you don’t qualify for a bursary. Student loans are not necessarily the way to go anymore, especially if the idea of spending the first 10 years of your professional employment in debt seems unappealing.

The reality is that sex, does sell. And porn can make you a good deal of money. But what about phone sex? It’s far less intimidating and exhausting than shooting a porno every Wednesday afternoon after your sociology lecture at UCT. Belle Knox became widely known after becoming a porn star to pay for her tuition at Duke University. In her words,

” “The cost of studying at Duke University is $60,000 a year. I didn’t qualify for any government loans, so I had the option of taking out private loans at the rate of 11% interest or simply paying out of pocket. I knew that sex work was lucrative … I saw that porn could give me the financial independence I needed.”

She had a mixed reaction of support and utter revulsion from the public. But there is a new breed of young sex worker who is currently making a tidy profit from never actually engaging in any actual physical sexual contact with a client. Marie is a 22 year old girl making money out of an X-rated chat site called ‘121 girls’ :

“”The good thing about this job is that you really do leave it all behind at the end of the day. Nobody has to know if you don’t want them to. I’m not ashamed of what I do, but at the same time, your sexuality is very private and has nothing to do with your day-to-day life. I would hate it if people recognized me on the street and thought they knew exactly the type of person I was because they saw me in an adult film.”

“It’s definitely not for everyone, I can say that. Most phone sex operators only last about three months and there’s a reason for that. If you don’t have the right attitude it can be really tough maintaining a healthy outlook on sex. Usually I can detach myself from what’s going on over the phone, but if you’re feeling vulnerable for whatever reason you can feel pretty worthless at times. You’re just a vessel for a stranger’s sexual gratification, so unless you’re a tough character that can have a really negative effect.”

At the end of the day, surviving in this world means taking your gaps. And not everyone has the opportunity to receive a higher and quality education when considering not just the cost of living, but merely SURVIVING. For woman, it becomes arguably easier to use ones sexuality to make money instantaneously  – so why not phone sex?
