Yesterday’s courtroom drama lead to a crucial moment in Oscar Pistorius’s trial proceedings. Chief prosecutor Gerrie Nel again lambasted Pistorius’ credibility and his inability to take responsibility for his actions.
Under Gerrie Nel’s scrutiny and cross-examination, Oscar Pistorius has been ducking and diving responsibility. But one instance yesterday was a great turning point in the trial – the moment public sentiment crept into the trial.
During the cross-examination on Thursday, Pistorius was again shirking blame. Pistorius then went on to say that he “heard” that Sam Taylor and Darren Frescoe had colluded against him to construct parallel testimonies. But when Gerrie Nel asked who told him of their collusion, Pistorius realised he was under oath and gave another “I can’t recall.” At this statement, the gallery laughed. Even Nel chuckled slightly. The judge scolded both legal sides and the public for the outburst.
I also want to say something to people out there; you possibly think this is entertainment. It is not. So please restrain yourselves,” said Judge Thokozile Masipa when she halted proceedings.
But the damage had been done. Think about it – the whole court room made their sentiment known. No matter how much the judge and lawyers have been avoiding media and social media, the laughter could not be avoided.
In the words of Gerrie Nel, “It’s the strangest day today.”
